What Is AI — And What It Isn’t
- Description
Understanding AI Without Hype or Misconception
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly present in everyday life and work, yet many people still ask what AI is, how it works, and what it can realistically do.
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to systems that can process information, identify patterns, and generate outputs such as text, analysis, or recommendations based on data. It does not think or understand in the same way humans do, but operates based on learned patterns and probabilities.
This introductory course provides a clear and practical understanding of AI without technical jargon or exaggerated expectations. It focuses on how AI works at a fundamental level, where it is useful, and where its limitations lie.
Rather than focusing on tools, the course develops foundational awareness and perspective — helping learners form realistic expectations and apply sound judgement when encountering AI in daily activities or professional environments.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand what artificial intelligence (AI) is and how it generally works
- Recognise common misconceptions about AI
- Identify what AI can and cannot do reliably
- Apply clearer judgement when encountering AI-assisted outputs
- Understand the continued role of human responsibility in AI-supported decisions
